Garry has vast experience assessing, treating and providing expert advice for children, adolescents and adults with psychological challenges. Respectful and compassionate, Garry is able to draw on a range of therapies, including individual, parent, family and group counselling, as well as medication if required.

Garry is a strong believer in matching the treatment to the patient, rather than adopting a “one size fits all” approach. He enjoys working collaboratively with health professionals, schools, universities and other agencies.

Professor Garry Walter AM

Helping people of all ages to understand and tackle psychological problems

Professor Garry Walter is a child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist of international renown.

Garry is affiliated with The University of Sydney where, among other roles, he has served as Professor at the Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine and, for over a decade, as Chair of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

For several years, Garry was Director of Thomas Walker Hospital (“Rivendell”), Australia’s flagship adolescent psychiatric hospital.

For many years Garry also served as Clinical Director of Child and Youth Mental Health Services at Royal North Shore Hospital, along with associated hospitals and community services in Northern Sydney Local Health District.

Garry served as International Editor-at-Large of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for several years, and was Editor of Australasian Psychiatry from 2001-2013.

Garry has earned a number of key research awards and as an author, he’s published almost 400 papers on a range of topics across the mental health field.

Garry has also delivered invited talks at major meetings and universities both locally and abroad, including at Yale in 2011 to coincide with its centenary of child mental health research.

Over a long and distinguished career in psychiatry, Garry has provided advice and consultation to a variety of State, national and international bodies, including psychiatric associations, medical boards and governments, in relation to policies, program development and complex clinical, ethical and medicolegal cases. In 2016, he was also appointed to the post of Foundation Medical Director of the Doctors’ Health Advisory Service.

Among other prizes, in 2009 Garry was awarded a prestigious College Citation by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists for “a remarkable contribution to the College and the profession of psychiatry through his exceptional and tireless work as Editor of Australasian Psychiatry and as a leading investigator, educator, administrator and clinician”.

In 2012, Professor Walter was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to medicine.
